The concept began as the Lend-Lease program during the Second World War. While the program started as a means of providing aid in the form of supplies and goods, air bases were leased to facilitate the transport of those goods. This system bred the modern land lease we use today.

Aviation: While the concept evolved from military air bases, commercial airports lease land for complementary purposes. A popular format divides the airport into several different areas, which relate to the required use.

Cell Phone Towers: This involves the placement of equipment or signage on a property. The cell phone company will pay the landowner a fee for the privilege of placing a tower on the property and rights to access the tower for regular maintenance.

Signage: Similarly, corporations may lease a portion of agricultural land adjacent to a high-traffic interstate in order to place their billboard signage. Access rights will typically be addressed in the lease agreement.

Agricultural Use: Government-owned land can be leased for agricultural purposes such as growing crops or watering and grazing livestock.

Parking: Corporations sometimes lease adjacent land in order to accommodate expanding parking requirements.
