The proliferation of smartphone apps – many of which are cheap or even free – can result in app overload, screen clutter and memory wasted on stuff you don’t need or use.
Writer and editor Sam Grobart, has a great system for organizing smartphone apps and discussed it recently in a New York Times Personal Tech column.
Here are some of his top tips:
Folders
Begin by using folders, he advises. To create a folder on an iPhone with an iOS operating system, simply press and hold an app icon until all icons are shaking, then drag one app over the other; a folder will be created with both apps in it.
Once you’ve set up a folder, name it and populate it with up to 12 apps. Use the same procedure for an Android 4.0 operating system, where each folder can hold up to 16 apps.
Use it or lose it
To avoid app overpopulation, observe the one-in, one-out rule. When you add a new app, discard one that you haven’t used in a while.
To delete an app from your phone, press the icon until it starts shaking, and then tap the “x” in the corner.
On older Android models, go to Settings to find the “manage apps” screen.
Stay on one screen
With folders, you can fit more than 200 apps on one screen. However, if you have more than 200 apps (or more than 300 apps on Android), you have too many. Period.
